Secure your garage, garden shed and yard, particularly if you go away during the holidaysWhen away from home, keep curtains and blinds partly open Use an automatic time switch to turn on the TV or radio during the day and some of the lights at night Cancel the newspapers and get neighbours to clear mail and junk mail when you go away for more than a day Lock up ladders, lawnmowers, bikes, garden/electrical tools and anything that could be stolen or help intruders gain entry Don' t hide door keys around the house or garden, burglars know all the usual hiding places and are likely to find them Secure skylights, garage doors and louvre windows Install smoke detectors to act as an early warning Leave the TV on with volume down when quickly dashing outEnsure that double-keyed deadlocks are fitted to all exterior doors and keyed window locks are fitted to all accessible windows

Bulbs have to be planted fairly deep, usually 4-8 inches, so pick spots where you won\'t disturb perennial root clumps.
Dig a hole to the required depth. Mix some bone meal or other bulb food in with the soil at the bottom of the hole. Set the bulb in the hole, making sure it's rightside up. (The hairy, root-like side should face down, the stem up!)
Re-fill the hole with loose soil, and for autumn plantings keep it moist till the ground freezes.
